The Roses
Madi's Blog By madigrace on 4/22/2008 11:04 PM
There was once a father who had three sons.
To each of his sons the father gave a small rosebush which he helped them plant by their windows.
"Be patient," the father told his children "pray that your plant grows strong, care for them tenderly;
and one day you will be rewarded for your waiting."
The children each purposed in their hearts to watch and wait, excited at the prospect of a reward.

Rumblings in the night
Dad's Blog By drewberk on 4/17/2008
I woke up this morning at 4:37 AM to the sound of my wife screaming "Drew! Something... DREW EARTHQUAKE!!!!" I awoke to what sounded like peals of thunder outside and my bed bumping around like a washing machine who's spin cycle is out of balance.

Amy was beside herself not knowing whether to grab Micah from his bed or run downstairs and wake the children before they were crushed. In my soberminded 4:30 AM way, (aren't all fathers soberminded at 4:30 AM in the middle of their first earthquake?), I encouraged her to wait and not wake anyone just yet as it seemed things were settling down and not getting worse. She paused and indeed it seemed things were slowing down. In a few more seconds everything was still again. I laid down while Amy stood guard for another minute or two. When she laid down I suggested that maybe it would be a good school project for us to study earthquakes and figure out what in the world we were supposed to do next time if it were worse.< ...

Trusting, Thankfulness, and Teacups
Madi's Blog By madigrace on 3/25/2008 10:21 AM
   Lately I have been learning acceptance with joy.
Acceptance is not the hard part- it's the 'with joy' part that we all sometimes find difficult to put into practice. It always sounds so much easier than it really is.
But, you know- it's been getting easier.
Praise God!

   I have been remembering all day an analogy that a friend of mine used a few months ago.
She reminded us, by holding up a teacup, that God has poured us a cup for every day. He poured ...

Happy
Madi's Blog By madigrace on 1/23/2008 6:26 PM

Right now the afternoon sunlight is flooding through my window, bathing me in it's warmth and light. I am completely surrounded by the love and goodness of my God. I looked up the meaning of "happy" in the dictionary and one of the definitions was "blessed"... I am definately happy today. I am so very blessed. God is always good, and He makes all things beautiful in its time- His perfect time.

"I will praise you, O Lord, with all my heart; I will tell of all your wonders. I will be glad and rejoice in you: I will sing praise to your name, O Most High." Psalm 9:1-2

One of my favorite songs is a scripture played and sung by a friend and sister in the Lord named Jill Moore. I am very blessed by it, and I want you to be blessed by it, too.

...we're a happy family...
Madi's Blog By madigrace on 1/19/2008 12:41 AM
       Tonight Dad and Mom went out to eat. What Dad doesn't know is that Mom reserved a room for them at a Bed and Breakfast Inn many miles away in a little historic town for the weekend. Two days ago was Dad and Mom's twentieth anniversary. Can you believe it?! 20 years together... and they love each other now even more than they did the day they were married.
    I watched my dad this past year as he took care of my mom during her many illnesses. I watched as he comforted her, prayed with her and did everything possible to ease her pain and make her comfortable. There were times when we feared that Mama wasn't going to pull through. I don't know what Dad was thinking during those times, but for our sakes and Mama's, he remained strong... assuring us all that Mom was going to be okay and praying for us that we would trust the Lord and continue to function as a family amidst the stress and uncertainty.

You can trust
Madi's Blog By madigrace on 1/9/2008 6:50 PM

   In life, there are times when we come to the very ends of our ropes. Sometimes we find that our lives are spinning out of our control and there is absolutely nothing we can do about it. For some, the struggle is inward; for others, it is outward and physical. Everyone goes through times like this, but not everyone responds in the same way. There are those who press on, and there are those who give up.

   There comes a time in each of our lives that we realize that what we know and what we can do is no longer enough. We come to the place where we find the ends of ourselves and it is a horrifying discovery if we have nowhere else to turn. Where do we turn when life suddenly takes a turn for the worst and we find ourselves on a downward spiral? Who can we go to for help when we suddenly discover that we are not in control after all? There is but one answer- God.

   There is nothin ...

Just a little poem
Madi's Blog By madigrace on 11/9/2007 12:40 AM

IMG_8341.JPG

One hundred fingers, big and small;
One hundred toes; and that's not all-
Count the noses: ten in all;
Twenty ears hear Mama call.

Ten pairs of lips; ten pairs of eyes;
Ten voices that can laugh or cry.

Twenty hands inside another;
Ten hearts that all love each other.

Twenty elbows; twenty knees;
Ten tongues licking melting treats.

"Boys against girls!" ten voices call
to start a game of basketball.

Ten birthday cakes every year;
Ten birthday songs sung loud and clear.

Ten happy smiles on ten bright faces...
Ten pairs of eyes see new places...

Ten children love their Dad and Mom...
Ten voices lo ...

Well, she's willing...
Madi's Blog By madigrace on 10/31/2007 7:59 AM

" I wasn't God's first choice for what I've done in China... I don't know who it was... it must have been a man... a well-educated man. I don't know what happened. Perhaps he died. Perhaps he wasn't willing... and God looked down... and saw Gladys Aylward... and God said- 'Well, she's willing.'"

Beautiful
Madi's Blog By madigrace on 10/14/2007 6:12 AM

   I read this passage this morning from God's Word that I wanted to share with you. It paints a beautiful picture of God's love and mercy toward us, even though we are so undeserving.

"Praise the Lord, O my soul;
all my inmost being, praise His holy name.
Praise the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits-
who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases,
who redeems your life from the pit
and crowns you with love and compassion,
who satisfies your desires with good things
so that your youth is renewed like the eagle's.
The Lord works righteousness and justice for all the oppressed.
He made known His ways to Moses,
His deeds to the people of Israel:
The Lord is compassionate and gracious,
slow to anger, abounding in love.

   These last two months have been very exciting and busy for our family. We are now finally moved in to our permanent (Lord willing) Missouri home. What a blessing it is to be home!

   We have celebated twelve birthdays this year, moved three times, welcomed a new member into our family, done many new and exciting things, and made tons of great memories as a family.

   Our days are full to overflowing with all kinds of activity. Things like unpacking boxes, getting rid of old junk, cleaning and re-cl ...
